distillery production region

While Freud represents a new wave of German whisky producers, the Ziegler Distillery embodies a rich heritage dating back to 1865. Located in Freudenberg, a small town in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Ziegler has long been renowned for its fruit brandies and liqueurs, featuring raspberry, plum, pear and cherry distillates thaty we're told are amazing.

In recent years, the distillery has expanded its repertoire to include whisky and gin, joining the ranks of Germany's growing craft whisky producers.

The company sources its barley locally, emphasising a connection to German agriculture. This focus on provenance extends to their production methods, which combine time-honoured distilling techniques more commonly associated with fruit brandies applied to the distillation of barley.

Freud Distiller's Cut is initially matured in chestnut casks and ex-bourbon barrels, before being finished in casks that previously held Ziegler Old Plum brandy. Total maturation time is at least five years.

The branding is notably modern, in contrast to the historical distillery in which it is made and the product design of Ziegler's more traditional fruit brandy expressions.

We're very excited to see what the future has in store for both the Ziegler distillery and the German whisky scene.
